More Zika cases expected to emerge: Health Minister Gan Kim Yong

SINGAPORE: More local Zika cases are expected to emerge over time, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Sunday (Aug 28). This will be partly due to the fact that active testing is being carried out in affected areas, as well as the possible emergence of new imported cases, he added.  Mr Gan was speaking to the media after the Ministry of Health confirmed 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus infection at a press conference. "Singapore has a very high volume of international travel, therefore imported cases are almost inevitable," said Mr Gan, explaining that as many Zika cases are asymptomatic, there is a "very high likelihood" of the virus being imported to Singapore. He added that for these imported cases, the likelihood of local transmission "is also very high". This is why the Health Ministry is also working with doctors to be on the lookout for Zika cases, in order to identify clusters and carry out vector control. Mr Gan also said that

(Read also: New Zealand pizza chain to make deliveries by drone) Reebonz Indonesia executive manager Anggono Wijaya said that social media and digital marketing and collaborations with influencers and young designers were among the main reasons behind the increase of sales. "At first we focused in building the company itself, but since two years ago, we have been focusing on marketing our products," he told The Jakarta Post. Separately, the company's senior marketing manager Bernard Widjaja Ng said that the group of luxury consumers were evolving and expanding as luxury was no longer just for the select few. With growing affluence and ac

Asian stocks mixed

Asian stocks are mixed amidst low volumes and a lack of major market-moving news as traders tread water ahead of a speech by Fed chair Janet Yellen on Friday at the annual central bankers parley in Jackson Hole, where, markets hope, she'll provide clues as to when the Fed might raise interest rates. That the northern hemisphere is deep into the summer-vacation season isn't helping much. Japan's Nikkei closed +0.6%, apparently boosted by a fall in the yen vs the dollar, and India is +0.1%, although Hong Kong is -1.05% and China -0.6%. Source: Asian stocks mixed

Global Travel Spending Still Growing but at a Slower Pace

Global travel spending is still growing, although at a slower pace, despite weakening economies and fears over terrorism. The World Travel and Tourism Council, a group backed by travel providers with the mission to promote tourism, said in a report Monday that global travel spending for 2016 is expected to grow by 3.1 percent. That is down from a March forecast of 3.3 percent but still outpacing global economic growth, which the group expects to be 2.3 percent. Macroeconomic problems have a much bigger impact on travel than terrorist attacks, the group's president, David Scowsill, said. "Travelers aren't going to allow isolated terrorist attacks to put them off traveling," he said. Tourists worried about safety in France have chosen Spain or Italy instead, for example. Scowsill said destinations with tourist-specific attacks usually take two years to recover, while other types of attacks lead to a faster resumption of travel. Other travel groups are also

Obama Interrupting Vacation to Campaign for Clinton

EDGARTOWN, MASS. —  Golf game, afternoons at the beach and ... political campaigning? President Barack Obama is interrupting what so far has been a leisurely vacation to campaign and help raise money for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee. Obama has said there's never been anyone more qualified than Clinton, who was his rival in the 2008 presidential contest and his first-term secretary of state, to be president. Obama is slated to headline a Democratic Party fundraising reception Monday evening on Martha's Vineyard, the island playground off the coast of Massachusetts where he's in the midst of a two-week vacation with his wife, Michelle, and their daughters Malia and Sasha. Democrats Hank Goldberg and his wife, Carol, are hosting the event at their home in Chilmark, the same town where the president is renting a vacation home. Obama will deliver remarks, but the news media will not be permitted to hear his answers to questions asked by some of t

Visas for Central Asia: How-to guide

Image
Note: Visa requirements for every country are different, and visa policies are subject to change at any given time. The information in this post is intended to provide an overview of the visa application process for Central Asian countries as of August 2016, however, you should check on what the current visa requirements are for your nationality for each country in Central Asia before your visit. The countries of Central Asia, often referred to as the "Stans," are some of the last travel frontiers in the world. These countries are little known, and until recently, were difficult to visit. During my recent trip to Central Asia with G Adventures, I had the pleasure of visiting Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In each country, we saw few to no other travellers, and in each country we found a unique environment. As fascinating as the trip was, it was one of the more difficult trips to prepare for. This was almost entirely due to the fact that each country

Asian Cruise Tourism Continues Rapid Growth

By MarEx 2016-08-12 17:09:13 On Friday, the Cruise Lines International Association released its annual Asia Cruise Trends review, and the data show that the region continues to outperform all others for percentage growth, up by a quarter year over year for 2015. Vessel capacity and destination variety are also on the rise.  "While we expected Asia to experience record-breaking growth in cruise travel, we are astonished at the rate at which the region is emerging as one of the most significant cruise destinations and cruise source markets in the world," said Dr. Zinan Liu, chair of CLIA North Asia.  Over 1,500 cruise sailings are scheduled for this year, CLIA says, up 40 pecent from 2015, and total operating days have nearly doubled over the past three years. Total passenger capacity has soared to 3.2 million people.  Chinese cruisers are fueling the growth, CLIA says: Chinese passenger count grew by 40 percent in 2015, and accounted for almost half of all Asian passen
