As these countries showcase their living traditions and culture, it seems like there is no more important month for travelers to discover the individuality of a nation than in January. Bikaner Camel Festival, India. In honor of the desert animal, the Camel Festival is held to as gratitude to the camels for their service in an Indian's life. There will be camel dances, races, camel rides, and games. The beautiful beach city of Kihei in Hawaii ranked as the top rising spot in the U.S., while the laid-back local scene of San Jose del Cabo in Mexico earned the ranking of number one in the world. Travel App 2.0: 4 New Southeast Asian Start-ups Travelers Should Check Out

Image
Remember the days when travel agents, sandwiched into dingy offices with telephones virtually glued to their skulls, actually booked flights and hotels? And when word-of-mouth recommendations and sexy magazine articles (perish the thought!) determined one's itinerary rather than Trip Advisor? Such memories are fleeting, no doubt. The era of the DIY traveler—one who plans and books his own adventure through Zuji or Agoda—is here, and the need for a more local, customizable travel experience is here too. Even so, Juerg Kaufmann, co-founder and CEO of Singapore-based TravelerBuddy, says most travel apps are still not developed in a client-centric way. Many user pain points remain unaddressed, Kaufmann says, citing the lack of support for travelers once bookings and other arrangements have been made. "In many cases, travelers weren't able to travel because the passport was about to expire, visas weren't in place, vaccinations weren't taken,"

‘My best travel discovery of 2016’

Peter Frankopan, historian and authorThe world of 2016 is not all doom and gloom. In Asia, things are changing fast as the Silk Roads rise again. In September, I was in north-west China, in Dunhuang, between the Gobi and the Taklamakan deserts, on the southern Silk Road. The city is an oasis, the last stop, going west, before nearly 1,000km of sand, and near the Mogao caves, a Buddhist complex founded in the fourth century. The city is an oasis, the last stop, going west, before nearly 1,000km of sand, and near the Mogao caves, a Buddhist complex founded in the fourth century. My favourite spot is in the desert, above crescent-shaped Yueyaquan lake. The best views are at dawn from the top of a series of metal ladders pinned into the steep dunes. As you look down to the lake and city, you feel the heat and oppression of the desert behind you. Deciding to head west required determination, commitment and courage. As new connections are woven across Asia, it is hard not to feel awed by how easy it is to travel today – and how difficult it once was. It feels like the present meeting the past, and brushing a

Asia on Christmas alert as police foil two suspected bomb plots

By Fransiska Nangoy and Panarat Thepgumpanat JAKARTA/BANGKOK (Reuters) - Security forces across Asia were on alert on Friday ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, as police in Australia and Indonesia said they had foiled bomb plots and Malaysian security forces arrested suspected militants. Australian police said they had prevented attacks on prominent sites in Melbourne on Christmas Day that authorities described as "an imminent terrorist event" inspired by Islamic State. The announcement came after an attack in Berlin in which a truck smashed through a Christmas market on Monday, killing 12 people. The suspect was killed in a pre-dawn shoot-out with police in Milan on Friday, Italy's interior minister said. In Indonesia, where Islamic State's first attack in Southeast Asia killed four people in Jakarta in January, at least 14 people were being interrogated over suspected suicide bomb plots targeting the presidential palace in Jakarta and another un

Saigon travel companies say Google Maps abused by rivals to divert clients

By VnExpress  &nbspDecember 23, 2016 | 03:29 pm GMT+7 Several travel companies in Ho Chi Minh City have claimed that their rivals manipulated contact information on Google Maps in an alleged tactic to steal clients. Truong Duc Hai, CEO of Pearl of the Far East, said the phone numbers of his company and some others listed on Google Maps have all been changed to that of Asia Travel. He comdemned the act, saying as least 18 travel agencies were affected. Tourists now depend on Google to do research on tours and services, and incorrect listings are harmful, he told local media. Representing the companies, Hai filed in a complaint to the city's tourism administration on Monday, publicly accusing Asia Travel of sabotaging their business. Le Hong Son of Asia Travel, however, denied responsibility. Another company, Lu Hanh Viet, has also been accused of using a similar trick. Nguyen Van Tuan, head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, told the media

Why the sharing economy is a boon for business travel

Image
Millennials make up the biggest market of business travelers. Pic: Airbnb WHETHER you like it or not, the business travel sector is becoming less predictable. Gone are the days where suited travelers are whisked on shiny elevators into cold rooms. You could probably blame the shift on millennials, who make up the biggest market of business travelers. According to the Portrait of Business Travelers from MMGY Global report, millennials are traveling for business more than ever, and went on an average of 6.8 trips in the last year. The report also found that millennials are more likely to use room share services like Airbnb compared to their older counterparts, with 67 percent of younger travelers in favor of room sharing options. Ride sharing was also found to be increasingly popular, with 81 percent of millennials more likely to use a ride sharing platform over taxis. These stats show that the sharing economy encompassing ride sharing and room sharing models are re
