EU trade deal to help Canadian ports but won’t reverse trade to Asia, say experts

By Ross Marowits, The Canadian Press on October 21, 2013. MONTREAL – Canada's new trade deal with the EU will eventually help eastern ports expand their business with Europe but won't reverse what has been a momentum swing to Asia, experts said Monday. Port of Halifax CEO Karen Oldfield said the recently negotiated Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will "jet propel" existing trade with Europe without undercutting trade with other global regions. "I don't think it will shift the pendulum back necessarily," she said in an interview. "I think it will just grow the pie to an even bigger pie." European trade represented 38 per cent of the east coast port's business last year, the second-largest destination behind Asia and triple the activity with Latin America and the Caribbean. More than 416,000 containers passed through the port in 2012, of which 52 per cent were exports. The port's top five exports are newsprint and

Suzy Menkes says it's about time we expanded our focus, naming Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines as the new fashion destinations to watch. Though often overshadowed by their larger neighbours, these countries boast dynamic luxury markets that ought not to be underestimated by international brands. The renowned fashion editor will be heading to Singapore next month as part of the  International Herald Tribune 's Luxury Conference, the annual meet-up where style influencers are invited to talk about pressing issues within the industry. East Asia Games: Swimming star Ye claims gold, Jiao bronze

BEIJING - Double Olympic Champion Ye Shiwen claimed gold in the 200m individual medley at the East Asian Games Friday, as China continued to power ahead in the medals table. Ye won the race ahead of Hong Kong's Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, who took silver, and bronze medal winner Sakiko Shimizu of Japan. She set a new world record of 4 minutes 28.43 seconds to claim the 400m title and also broke the Olympic record in the 200m event. But she failed to win a single medal at the World Championships in Barcelona in late July. Ye is the star name for China at the East Asia Games, which are being held in the northern port city of Tianjin. Her swimming teammate, Jiao Liuyang - who also won gold in London, in the 200m butterfly - claimed bronze in Tianjin in the 50m butterfly event. Jiao's compatriot Lu
