Asia, choice destination for Indian vacationers: Survey

Mumbai, Sept 26:   Asian destinations like Singapore, Dubai and Thailand are fast emerging as the favourite destinations for Indian travellers, pushing the US, Australia and Mauritius to the backburner as expenses are spiralling with fall in rupee's exchange value, says a survey. "Singapore, Dubai and Thailand are replacing the US, Australia and Mauritius as top three choices due to rising costs," an ICICI Lombard survey said here today. As per the survey, factors like a sharp fall in the rupee, expensive overseas travel and rising air travel have contributed towards this change of preference among travellers. The survey covered Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Indore with inputs coming in from 1,043 participants. Singapore is Asia's top convention destination

SINGAPORE : The Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry has become big business in Singapore as the world continues its pivot towards Asia. The number of conventions and meetings is expected to boom over the next couple of years, bringing in billions of dollars. Singapore already leads the region but to keep its competitive edge, industry experts say it will have to think niche and technical. The MICE industry is no longer just about convention centres or airports or even speakers. The sector is rapidly changing, being reshaped by a new and younger generation of convention goers. Oscar Cerezales, Board Member, Professional Convention Management Association, says: "They don't want this boring layout, theatre style. They want free slots during the session because they love to multi-task. The new generation wants shorter meetings. They don't want meetings during the weekend. And of course, they really want interactive meetings." An

Forget about the sluggish economy and the concern over inflation and stock markets in Asia for a little while, because the news on the travel and tourism front is good, especially in India. Indians tend to travel in family groups so operators must provide activities for a wide range of ages, says Madhavan Menon, managing director of Thomas Cook (India). According to a UN World Tourism Organization report, the number of Indians travelling abroad is forecast to rise to 50 million by 2020. Over the past summer, there were almost no seats available on flights to Bangkok, Singapore or Dubai, the three most popular short-haul (3-4 hours) destinations for Indians. Be it for leisure, sightseeing, entertainment, shopping or business, there are more Indians travelling overseas than the number of foreigners flying into the country. "Outbound tourism from India is growing at about 20-25% per year. Part of this is due to higher disposable income among India's evolving and bur
