What's New 28 Jul 2016 "Pasundan ( the land of the Sundanese) was created when God was smiling", says a famous quote from MAW Brouwer, renowned Dutch psychologist and writer who spent most of his life in Bandung. This could not have been a better illustration of the irresistible beauty of the city and everything around it. Completely surrounded by mountains, Bandung, capital city of West Java Province is blessed with a cool and pleasant climate as well as picturesque open vistas. During the old colonial days, it attracted rich Dutch colonial planters to make the city their retreat  away from the hot tropical climate along the coast. The reputation still holds to this day, where Bandung remains a favorite retreat for entire families to enjoy its fresh air and picturesque sceneries. By toll road, Bandung is only a couple of hours' ride from Jakarta.Today, aside from refreshing cool air and inspirational sceneries, families can also enjoy a wide range of exciting

Updated Panama Canal opens premium Asian markets to US LNG

Image
It has been quite a year for the US LNG industry. In February, Cheniere's Sabine Pass LNG terminal exported the continental US' first commercial cargo of LNG. Since February, Cheniere's Train 1 at Sabine Pass, the only fully commissioned operating US LNG export terminal, has exported 19 cargoes to eight different nations on three continents. While South America has so far received more US LNG cargoes than any other region, the re-opening of the newly expanded Panama Canal could drive new competition from North Asian markets. While many expected the majority of Cheniere's cargoes to end up on Europe, ten of the first 16 cargoes (three are out at sea) have delivered into South America, specifically Brazil, Chile and Argentina. Only two cargoes have delivered into Europe. Cheniere's first cargo was delivered to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's furthest regasification terminal from Sabine Pass. Depending on what terminal you deliver into Brazil, shipping a cargo o

EU court upholds sanctions on Zimbabwe ex-attorney general

Zimbabwe's Prosecutor General Johannes Tomana (C) arrives escorted by policemen at the Harare Magistrates court, February 2, 2016. REUTERS/Philimon Bulawayo BRUSSELS: The European Union's top court on Thursday dismissed an appeal by Zimbabwe's former attorney general and others against an EU-wide travel ban and asset freeze imposed for human rights infringements. The European Union began restrictive measures against certain people and entities in Zimbabwe in 2002. Johannes Tomana, then attorney general, and 120 other people and companies were placed on the list in 2012. The 28 EU member states said the reason for Tomana's inclusion was that he had engaged in activities that "seriously undermine democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law". Tomana and the others applied to the EU's courts to have their listing annulled. The General Court, the EU's second highest court, dismissed their case in 2015, prompting thei

Why Southeast Asia's Mekong Delta Should Be Your Next Cruise Destination

Photo by Felix Odell The Cambodia-based Aqua Mekong can accommodate 40 passengers. The Vietnamese port city of My Tho sits on one of the Nine Dragons, narrow branches that the Mekong fans into near its mouth. It's almost a two-hour drive across the delta from the bustling urban sprawl of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), where we'd landed that morning. During the van ride, my three kids had been plugged into their devices, barely glancing up as we passed villages with open shop fronts, canals where merchants steered sampans with single oars, green rice paddies dotted with pastel-painted ancestral graves. When I begged them to look at the world instead of at their smartphones, my 14-year-old daughter retorted, "This is the world, Mom," without lifting her eyes. Then, as we ascended the gangway onto the Aqua Mekong, the sleek wood-and-glass, three-deck ship on which we'd be sailing from Vietnam to Cambodia over the next five days, my daughter

Kerry meets Southeast Asia ministers after Chinese win

By Matthew Lee | AP July 25 at 6:13 AM VIENTIANE, Laos — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is meeting with his counterparts from South East Asia after they were unable to agree on a statement criticizing China for territorially expansion in the South China Sea. Kerry met with the foreign ministers from the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at a regional security conference in Laos on Monday and made no direct mention of the South China Sea tensions. Instead, he praised ASEAN for speaking up for "a rules-based international system that protects the rights of all nations." Earlier Monday, the bloc, however, omitted any mention of a recent international arbitration panel ruling in a dispute between the Philippines and China that said Beijing's claims in the South China Sea were illegal. Historic areas in Singapore you must visit

To show the true colors of the country, we list several areas that can give you a glimpse about the life and history of Singapore. Singapore River This is probably the most historic area from which the country received its name when Sang Nila Utama, a Sumatran prince, saw a lion-like animal when he entered the river and named the area 'Singa-pura', or Lion City. Whether the legend is true, this river has built the foundation of the city over centuries through trade. After having hea

Premier Inn to Commence Phased Withdrawal from Operations in India and South East Asia

Whitbread is to commence a phased withdrawal from Premier Inn operations in India and South East Asia.  The move is part of plans to focus Premier Inn's international growth strategy on a smaller number of specific markets where the company says it "can generate good long term sustainable returns and where there is the greatest long term opportunity to build scale".  Premier Inn will now focus its international strategy on continuing to grow its businesses in Germany and in the Middle East. Air Transport Supports 28.8 Million Jobs, $626 Billion of Asia Pacific GDP

Aviation is vital to the modern, globalised world, supporting millions of jobs and driving economic growth. But the benefits of connectivity must be protected with appropriate support from governments if the air transport sector is to help fulfill its potential as a connector of people, trade and tourism and is a driver of sustainable development. These are the conclusions drawn in a new report, Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders, issued by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). Worldwide, aviation supports 62.7 million jobs and generates $2.7 trillion in gross domestic product (GDP). Not only does air transport provide significant economic benefits, but it also plays a major role in the social development of people and communities all over the globe, allowing people to travel for educational opportunities and cultural exchange. Across Asia Pacific, specifically, air transport supports 28.8 million jobs and contributes $626 billion to the region's GDP. In the next 20 years

Book early and save, Japan travel agencies say

TOKYO -- Travel companies in Japan are letting customers book as much as a year in advance to lock in lower airfares and ensure hotel room availability as global travel demand climbs. ANA Holdings unit ANA Sales will begin this month letting customers book flexible packages combining airfare and lodging up to 355 days in advance for certain destinations, compared with the current 300-day cutoff. Trips to popular honeymoon destination Hawaii will be eligible, as will European packages popular with senior citizens. Cancellation is free up to 30 days before a trip in most cases. Booking early increases chances for savings on airfare and other elements of a trip. Getting the cheapest seat possible on a round-trip economy flight to Hawaii, for example, can shave up to 60,000 yen ($561) off the total cost. Affordable packages from Japan Airlines unit Jalpak going on sale in August will be available for booking through March 2017, two months farther out than before. JTB's end-
