Red Roof, the US budget hotel group, has arrived in Asia for the first time with the launch of a new property in Osaka.

The former 198-room Floral Inn recently underwent a US$14.5 million renovation, including the addition of 26 new rooms, and has now reopened as the 224-room Red Roof Plus Namba-Osaka.

"Red Roof's continued global expansion is a definitive sign of how healthy and in demand our brand is," said Andrew Alexander, president of Red Roof, which operates more than 470 hotels, mainly in the US.

"From the Americas to Asia, consumers' need for comfortable lodging at a value price cannot be underestimated. Red Roof is stepping up to the plate and providing what travellers need in a diverse number of cit ies around the world."

Red Roof made headlines in Asia last year when it signed a contract with Thailand's Paragon Group for the development of a series of new-build hotels across the Southeast Asian country. These plans remain in place, with Red Roof stating that it is currently in the process of "securing sites in all major tourist locations, from Bangkok to Phuket".

The company's first international hotel opened in Brazil last September, as part of an agreement to develop up to 40 properties in the South American country over the next 25 years.

"At Red Roof our international development and expansion efforts have been extremely successful," said Phil Hugh, the company's chief development officer. "The opening of the Red Roof Plus in Osaka is a testament to the appeal of the Red Roof brand; its attractiveness to investors and travellers and adds to our growing portfolio of properties in global locations including Brazil and Thailand. Development and growth are intrinsic to Red Roof's DNA."

The Red Roof Plus Namba-Osaka is located close to the Dotonbori-Sennichi district of Japanese city, close to several dining, retail and entertainment establishments. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and a restaurant.
