U.S. Issues Zika Travel Advisory for 11 Southeast Asia Countries

Image
Skift Take Zika is a serious threat, particularly for pregnant women and their offspring. Travelers should be cautious but with remedial efforts, this, too, shall pass. — Dennis Schaal U.S. health officials are advising pregnant women to postpone travel to 11 countries in Southeast Asia because of Zika outbreaks in the region. The advisory issued Thursday targets travel to Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Zika has been in some areas of Southeast Asia for years, and some residents may be immune. But a number of U.S. travelers have become infected there in the last year, so there is a danger to visitors. Most infected people suffer a mild and temporary illness, at worst. But infection during pregnancy can causes severe brain-related birth defects. The virus is spread primarily by bites from infected mosquitoes. ___ This article

How the Barclaycard Arrival Plus Offers Great Flexibility for Travel Redemptions

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We may receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertising Policy, visit this page. The Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard has long been one of my favorites due to the flexibility it offers for redeeming for travel-related expenses that can't be covered (at least, not efficiently) with other types of points or miles. And now that it's offering a higher sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles (vs. 40,000 miles for the standard offer) after you spend $3,000 in the first three months, this very good card is more appealing than ever. My partner and I both signed up for the Arrival Plus card, and we redeemed the miles from our sign-up bonuses in two very different ways, each time using the rewards to supplement other miles and points redemptions for our trips. To show you just how flexible these miles can be, I'll detail each of our redemp

Image
The romance of travel might just be personified by this one ferry crossing in particular, setting sail from one continent to another just has the allure of adventure and the unknown. But what makes it even more fun is that despite transiting across the narrow crossing you are still in the same city!! Taking the ferry across the Bosphorus is a must do when visiting this lively and historic city, the heartbeat of Turkey and the reason for the rise of this gigantic city! A bucket list item ticked: We've crossed from Europe to Asia via ferry before, and into Turkey too! Back in 2012 we set sail from the Greek island of Kos for a day of Asian adventures in Bodrum. But somehow this just didn't cut it! There is something truly adventurous about crossing borders as it is, I always get a flutter of excitement as we cross the boundary from one place to another, whether that be a country, continent, state or county. There is something of the unknown, a change, something new i

Low-cost luxury, cruise and Asian expansion: Travel 2's new brochure highlights

Travel 2 is also adding Ryanair flights to its Simply Luxury short-haul programme, with the brochure due out in January 2017. "There's demand for this from agents because some airports, such as Stansted and Prestwick, are only really served by Ryanair," says McCreadie. "Customers want to fly from their local airports so are prepared to book a Ryanair flight and then spend more on better quality accommodation and maybe get a suite." Another development, which will apply across both Travel 2 and Gold Medal programmes, is to only include hotels within brochures that have a minimum rating of at least four stars on TripAdvisor. "Customers are using TripAdvisor and will check the ratings of any hotel their agent books for them," adds McCreadie. "We want agents to be able to recommend anything with 100% confidence and that their customers won't see horror reviews." In Florida, Travel 2 has added more theme park options from

2017 a Mixed Bag for Corporate Travel

2017 a Mixed Bag for Corporate Travel Advito's forecast for next year predicts sluggish activity in Europe and parts of Asia, with real growth to be found in the globe's emerging markets. 2016 may not be over, but industry experts in corporate travel are already predicting what the future will hold for next year. Travel consultancy Advito has just released its industry forecast report, which gives a mixed view of the global market for 2017. Multiple factors, including the threat of global terror and Brexit, have meant that many businesses have reduced their travel budgets. In North America, it is expected that increased competition between carriers will help to keep airfares relatively low. However, Advito has issued words of caution when it comes to the region's hotel rooms. As quoted by Skift, the report says that corporate buyers can "…expect hotel chains to further reduce the number of rooms they make available at a negotiated discount." &quo

Image
The force of tourism in India is strong. Pic: Andrea Moroni/flickr ACCORDING to Advito's 2017 industry forecast report published on Skift, Asia's growing middle class and its taste for leisure travel will result in more direct air routes in the future. The report says: "Asia's fast-expanding middle classes have acquired an insatiable appetite for leisure travel, and this is driving a rapid increase in new direct routes, which are stimulating more demand." However, each country will grow at different paces, with the strongest and most rapid being India. The report says that India is surpassing China as Asia's major success economic story, recording a GDP of seven percent. India's performance has contributed to a domestic growth of air travel of up to 23 percent, but fares have managed to remain the same. On top of that, India has relaxed its 5/20 rule on airlines, which prevented airlines from launching international routes until they ha
